Mint Chaas, also known as Pudina Buttermilk, is a popular spiced Indian drink known for its refreshing taste and cooling properties. This mint buttermilk is enjoyed for its ability to beat the heat and unique blend of tangy, savoury, and minty flavours.

Mint Chaas is a traditional Indian summer drink made from yogurt, water, mint leaves, and aromatic spices such as cumin and salt. It is essential to Indian cuisine, especially during the scorching summer months.

Mint Chaas is very similar to masala chaas. The addition of mint leaves is what makes this recipe very special. The cool and tangy taste of the mint buttermilk drink makes it a popular choice for quenching thirst and aiding digestion, while its delightful flavour makes it a favourite for everyone.

How to make Mint Chaas?

Prepare the Mint Paste: In a blender, combine the fresh mint leaves, green chili, ginger, and a little water. Blend into a smooth paste.

Mix the Chaas: In a large bowl, whisk the yogurt using a wired whisk until smooth. Gradually add water and continue whisking until well combined.

Add Flavour: Stir in the mint paste, cumin powder, asafoetida, black salt(kala namak) and regular salt. Mix well. Add ice cubes if desired.

Serve: Garnish with a spring of mint or finely chopped coriander leaves.

Tips & Suggestions to make the best Mint Chaas

Pudina chaas tastes best when cold. Serve it at room temperature if you don’t want an ice-cold drink. Store the buttermilk drink in earthen pots if you want to have a slightly chill drink at any time of the day.

Make the mint buttermilk drink entirely in the blender jar by adding all the ingredients to it. This is a convenient option and gives a nice, frothy mint chaas.

For a creamier texture, use full-fat yogurt. You can use homemade curd or store bought for this recipe.

Add chaat masala in place of black salt, if desired.

Adjust the consistency by adding more or less water according to your preference.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Plain Yogurt
  • 2 cups Water
  • ¼ cup Fresh Mint Leaves / Pudina
  • 1 small Green Chilli adjust spice to your taste
  • ½ inch Ginger Piece
  • a pinch Asafoetida optional
  • ½ teaspoon Cumin Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Black Salt optional
  • Salt as needed
  • Ice cubes

Instructions
