Tips to make a good Orange Cake

The key to a delicious orange loaf cake is using fresh oranges. Use freshly squeezed orange juice and zest for the best flavour. If using store-bought orange juice, use orange juice with No Added Sugar.

Ensure all the ingredients, especially the milk, butter and eggs, are at room temperature before making the cake batter. This will help the ingredients mix more efficiently, resulting in a more evenly baked cake.

Overmixing the batter can cause the cake to be dense. Mix the batter until just combined.

Baking time may vary from oven to oven. Insert a skewer in the middle of the cake to check if it’s done.

Once it is done baking, let it cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before removing it. This will prevent the cake from breaking or falling apart.

Store the cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for up to a week.

Variations in Orange Cake

Here are a few variations with an orange loaf cake. You can experiment with different flavours and ingredients to create your unique version of this delicious cake.

Chocolate orange loaf cake: Add cocoa powder to the cake batter to create a chocolate-orange flavour combination. You can add some chocolate chips to the batter too.

Orange and almond loaf cake: Add almond flour or chopped almonds to the cake batter for a nutty flavour and texture.

Orange and cranberry loaf cake: Add dried cranberries to the cake batter to give it a tart and sweet flavour, which complements the orange flavour well.

Poppy seed and Orange cake: Add poppy seeds to the cake batter for a nutty texture and flavour that goes well with the orange.

Orange and cardamom loaf cake: Add ground cardamom to the cake batter for a warm and spicy flavour that pairs well with the orange.

Glazed orange cake: Add a simple glaze made of powdered sugar and orange juice to the top of the cake for an extra burst of orange flavour and sweetness.

Notes

Use fresh oranges for the best flavour and aroma.
Ensure all the ingredients, especially the butter and eggs, are at room temperature. This helps them blend easily and create a lighter and fluffier texture.
Mix the batter until it’s just combined. Overmixing can cause the cake to become dense.
You can use a loaf pan that’s the correct size for the recipe. If the pan is too small, the batter may overflow, and the cake may not rise properly if it’s too large.
Add orange zest to the batter for extra flavour. This is the outer layer of the orange peel that contains a lot of essential oils and adds a burst of citrus flavour to the cake.
Test the cake for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center. If it comes out clean, the cake is cooked well. If not, bake it for a few more minutes and test it again.
Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before removing it to a wire rack to cool completely. This helps the cake to set and prevents it from breaking apart when you remove it from the pan.
