What makes Paneer Thecha different from your usual paneer dishes like paneer butter masala or paneer tikka? It’s the addition of thecha – a traditional Maharashtrian chutney made with fresh green chilies, garlic, and peanuts. This bold and spicy chutney coats every cube of soft, sautéed paneer to give you a mouthwatering explosion of flavors.

Whether you’re tired of regular sabzis or looking to spice up your weekend meals, Paneer Thecha is super easy to make and comes together quickly with pantry-friendly ingredients. You can also try my super simple Paneer Fried Rice for yet another simple recipe.

In this recipe, I have explained how I made the Paneer Thecha at home. Once you try it, we bet it’ll become a regular in your recipe rotation!

Why you’ll love this Paneer Thecha Recipe?

Flavourful : Thecha is a traditional chutney known for its bold taste. Mixed with paneer, it gives a smoky, nutty, garlicky kick that’s delicious.

Great way to use Paneer : If you love paneer but are bored with the usual butter masala or kadai paneer, this is a fresh, unique alternative.

Quick and Easy : Takes less than 30 minutes to prepare. Perfect for busy weekdays or a quick weekend meal.

Nutty and Spicy Fusion : The crushed peanuts in the thecha add a lovely texture and nuttiness that balances the spicy chilies beautifully.

Made with Basic Ingredients : All you need are green chilies, garlic, peanuts, and paneer! Everything else is likely already in your kitchen.

How to make Paneer Thecha?

Heat a pan. Add green chilies and garlic cloves. Sauté on medium flame until they get slightly roasted and charred. Add roasted peanuts and sauté for another 30 seconds.

Let everything cool to room temperature. Transfer to a mixer jar and grind coarsely (not smooth) with a lot of coriander leaves(along with stem), required amount of salt and lemon juice. If you have the time and patience, you can grind it using a mortar and pestle instead of a mixer grinder.

Cut the paneer into cubes and coat them with the freshly made thecha mixture.

Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Toss in the paneer cubes, cook on a low flame and lightly sauté until golden on all sides.

Serve hot and enjoy!

Serving Suggestions

Paneer Thecha is super versatile. Here’s how you can enjoy it:

With Roti or Chapati – A spicy, satisfying dinner.

With Steamed Rice and Ghee – Serve it with some simple ghee rice or
coconut milk pulao. Simple yet flavourful meal.

Stuff in Wraps or Rolls – Add some onions and enjoy a spicy paneer wrap.

Serve with Salad – Pair with cucumber or onion salad for a balanced plate.

As a Side Dish – It works wonderfully as a side with dal and rice too.

Tips to make the best Paneer Thecha at home

Use Fresh Ingredients. Fresh green chilies, garlic, and soft paneer make a big difference in flavour.

Not a fan of too much heat? Use fewer chilies or remove the seeds before grinding.
If you are a spice lover and enjoy a fiery taste, add more chillies.

Overcooked paneer becomes rubbery. Sauté just until golden brown on a low flame.

Don’t make a smooth paste. The texture adds to the taste.

Frequently asked questions

Is this dish very spicy?

Originally, thecha is naturally spicy. But you can easily control the heat by using fewer chilies or milder green chilies.

Can I use store-bought paneer?

Yes! But try to use fresh paneer. If store-bought paneer feels hard, soak it in warm water for 10 minutes before using.

Can I make the thecha in advance?

Yes. You can make and refrigerate it for 2–3 days. Just toss with freshly sautéed paneer when ready.
